Government Incentives
The federal and provincial governments of Canada offer a number of incentives and rebates for residents who invest in renewable energy. The following list, though not comprehensive, provides an overview of the main programs available from the Canadian federal and Ontario governments.
Ontario Retail Sales Tax Rebate on Solar Energy Systems
Owners of residential premises can claim a refund of the RST paid on new
solar energy systems and on any expansions or upgrades to existing
systems installed in their premises. Includes solar PV systems and solar
thermal systems including wiring, controllers, inverters, the first
battery used to store the energy produced, thermal collector panels,
pumps, tubing, heat exchangers and insulated energy storage tanks.

Ontario Retail Sales Tax Rebate on Wind, Micro Hydro-Electric and Geothermal Energy Systems Rebate
As part of the 2004 Ontario Budget, the Ontario government expanded the
RST rebate for solar energy systems to include wind energy systems,
micro hydro-electric systems and geothermal energy systems installed on
residential premises.

Ontario Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program (SOP)
The Ontario Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program (SOP) provides a
guaranteed price for renewable generation and is intended to make it
easier for small, renewable power producers - such as farmers, rural
landowners, community groups and Aboriginal communities - to sell
energy.

Ontario Home Energy Retrofit Program
The Ontario Home Energy Retrofit Program provides homeowners with grants
of up to $5000 for home energy improvements. The homeowner is reimbursed
based on the measures undertaken and the rebate amount allowed for each
component. The Government of Ontario will also pay 50% of a home energy
audit to show how the home uses energy and where it is being lost.

Government of Canada's ecoENERGY Retrofit Program
Homeowners can have an energy evaluation done on their home and receive
a grant for undertaking recommended energy efficiency improvements. The
average grant is expected to be more than $1000 and the upgrades are
expected to result in a 30% reduction in energy use and costs.

Government of Canada's Home Renovation Tax Credit
The Home Renovation Tax Credit was proposed in the Conservative
Government's Economic Action Plan to allow Canadians who spend money on
home renovations to receive up to $1350 in tax relief. The tax credit
will provide a one-year, temporary 15% income tax credit on eligible
home renovation expenditures for work performed, or goods acquired
between January 27, 2009 and February 1, 2010. The credit may be claimed
on expenditures exceeding $1000 but no more than $10 000.
